In this role, you’ll drive the overall merchandising strategy for the Herman Miller Retail business across our portfolio of brands, including Herman Miller, Design Within Reach, HAY, as well as our ancillary furnishings offer for the global contract market. You will have financial accountability for these interconnected businesses, driving and maximizing growth and gross margins. By providing strategic leadership to the merchandising organization as well as to key cross-functional partners, you’ll deliver profitable results in a way that is aligned with our company culture. This will require an ability to understand and protect the integrity of our brands while taking thoughtful risks to drive the business forward. You will have a keen design sense, strong knowledge of the furnishings market and the ability to use that knowledge to build an assortment that is on brand, customer focused and profitable. This position requires a seasoned, strategic leader who will proactively drive the business through customer insights and marketplace knowledge. The role may be based in NYC/CT Retail HQ or our MI corporate HQ.

Partner with Category General Managers, Advanced Design and Development leadership, Portfolio Leads, and Brand Creative Directors as a senior leader on the Global Product Team to build best practices, organizational efficiency, and a strong talent pool.

Continuously evolve the overall assortment to ensure that we are identifying customer needs and developing or buying products that are compelling to the customer, differentiated from the competition, priced appropriately, and enable revenue growth.

Develop and lead a team of direct reports to ensure that the category-level merchandising strategy is clear and well executed. You will nurture and grow merchandising and product management skills across the organization.

Establish merchandise strategies to maximize sales and profitability.

Partner with Brand Creative Directors to ensure that our products are compelling and brand right and appeal to both existing and target customers.

Partner with the Chief Design Officer to ensure assortment and our brands are brought to life online in a compelling way.

Partner with Visual Merchandising Teams to ensure that presentation of the product is in line with the merchandising strategy.

Provide clear briefs and partnership to planning, sourcing, and product development partners to ensure that we are developing products that deliver strong margins and top line revenue growth. You will prioritize the product development queue and own ROI for development investments.

Provide leadership to cross-functional integrated product teams, working to align product management, product development, purchasing, operations, sales, and marketing efforts with our merchandise strategies and initiatives.

Work in partnership with the Retail leadership team to align retail strategies with overall corporate direction.

You might be just who we're looking for if you have...

15 years of progressive product management and merchant experience.

Senior merchant leadership experience with P&L responsibility.

A proven ability to deliver measurable financial results.

A strong understanding of financial measures and the ability to evaluate financial indicators and translate data into actionable information to drive results.

Design sensibility and an ability to grow an understanding of the Herman Miller Retail brands.

The ability to envision and deliver products that exceed customer expectations.

The ability to create and articulate competitive strategies, with a natural ability to balance strategic intent with business management and business priorities.

Specialty brand and direct merchandising experience coupled with a successful track record of growing businesses.

Product and brand building skills.

People leadership skills to establish clear direction in a challenging environment and bring out the best in employees.

The ability to develop constructive and effective relationships with direct report team and cross-functional partners, as well as the ability to maintain credibility and presence within the broader business.

Listening, communication, and negotiation skills.

Retail math acumen, including elements of markup, margin planning, open to buy, inventory productivity measures, and assortment planning.

An entrepreneurial mindset and you are comfortable taking risks.

The ability to build and maintain strong vendor partnerships.

Knowledge of the home and contract furnishings industry.

The ability to operate both at a high level and to dive into details.

International and domestic travel is required.
