Job Summary: The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) for the NYC mobile clinic program is a trained and licensed full-time LVT who assists in providing spay/neuter surgery and preventive and basic medical care (Primary Pet CarePPC) to pet dogs and cats living with their families in NYC. Services are provided by mobile unit parked at designated locations within targeted areas of NYC. The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) is responsible for the daily care of surgery patients, management, and administration of anesthetic/analgesic agents and other medications. The person in this position must also handle flow of animals through the spay/neuter clinic and recovery and discharge of surgery patients, as well as preparing the clinic for the following days surgery load. When the LVT is assigned to a PPC clinic, the LVT will assist the veterinarian with exams, diagnostics and client communication. The Licensed Veterinary Technician reports to the Operations Medical Staff Manager and Administrative Staff Manager, and takes direction and instruction from clinic veterinarian regarding medical protocols and patient care. This is a full time position. The schedule is 10 hours per day/ 4 days per week (including Saturday). The position reports daily to one of our Mobile Clinic locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Occasional flexibility in work hours, reporting location and overtime is required. Responsibilities: Medical (65%): Provide excellent patient care in all perioperative phases for up to 30 cats and/or dogs per day. Administer injections such as anesthetics, pain medications, vaccinations and other medications. Provide treatments, and supportive care as directed by MSNC Standard Operating Procedures and attending Veterinarian. Intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture and administer fluids as needed. Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative, and postoperative phases. Maintain medical supplies inventory, including emergency drugs. Ensure that supplies are in-date. Ensure that anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to Manager. Assist with patient exams, perform diagnostic testing. Prepare medications to go home with the client/patient as prescribed by the veterinarian. Maintain all necessary controlled substance drug logs and patient records. Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols. Customer Service (25%): Communicate in effective and professional manner with public and all ASPCA staff members, including Veterinarians, Senior Veterinary Assistants and Community Advocates. Know basic veterinary medical concepts, including, but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Be able to communicate such information to clients. When Veterinarian has documented information about an animals condition, adequately explain such information to clients. Work well both independently and cooperatively as part of team. Remain composed while working in fast-paced environment. Represent ASPCA in professional and courteous manner at all times. Administrative/Other (10%): Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments. Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Follow all written and verbally communicated MSNC Standard Operating Procedures. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions. Perform other duties as assigned.
