Eligible Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9am - 5:30pm (with flexibility
to work 12pm- 8:30pm closing time of Lab) Purpose: The Histology
Technician performs the routine tasks associated with making
stained slides from surgically excised tissue for the purpose of
diagnosis by a pathologist. Essential Job functions: Embeds, cuts,
stains and performs other tasks required to process tissue in the
Histology lab. Performs necessary tests for each sample as
required. Follows standard operating procedures for all testing.
Performs accurate gross description on tissue samples. Operates all
instruments/equipment according to accepted written procedures.
Registers and processes cases in the LIS; prints worksheets and
labels. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards
for the section. Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or
problems and notifies appropriate personnel; assists in problem
resolution. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the LIS and its
application to all aspects of job related functions. Recognizes and
resolves computer problems. Recognizes and resolves other problems
or inconsistencies. Ensures that records are accurate, complete,
legible, and appropriately filed and stored. Recognizes and
identifies instrument/ equipment problems. Resolves instrument/
equipment problems or contacts appropriate technical service.
Performs and documents all routine and non-routine maintenance
according to Standard Operating Procedures. Maintains a clean, neat
and orderly workplace including instrument and general laboratory
equipment. Performs and documents Quality Control daily according
to established laboratory protocol. Performs proficiency testing,
as requested. Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all
supplies. Verifies receipt, labels records and stores supplies
received. Has knowledge of other Summit Health Medical Group
computer systems in order to obtain clinical information. Prepares
reagents as needed. Assists with training new employees. Ensures
that all testing performed under his/her supervision is according
to established, approved procedures and quality control policies.
Ensures that all testing is done under optimal conditions (ie.
Instruments functioning properly; reagents in good condition and
proper technique followed.) Embed tissue specimen using best
technique possible to make sure that tissue is properly oriented
onto the block. Cut paraffin blocks meeting section protocol
according to tissue site. Assist with special stains and tissue
control slides for special stains and immunohistochemistry. Change
and/or rotate reagents on tissue processors, Leica stainer as
needed, with daily QC. Record daily Quality Control of all
instruments used, maintaining proper documentation of record
temperatures, instruments cleaning, and troubleshooting.
Investigates and resolves problems; informs laboratory manager of
any and all serious problems. File Surgical Blocks daily. Maintains
Distilled Water System QC and in working condition at all times.
Assist with accessioning as needed. Maintain in working order
Cassette and Slide printers Discard Surgical Specimens weekly, with
formalin neutralization. Maintain control of Xylene waste removal
with proper follow up. Responsible for receiving and keeping track
of all laboratory supplies and letting the Manager know when orders
need to be follow up with vendors. Responsible for the maintenance
and retention of all documents needed for Federal/State inspections
as directed by the Manager. Complies with all Summit Health
policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness and
infection control Physical Job Requirements Endurance (e.g.
continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking lifting,
carrying, pushing, and pulling) Work requires sitting, standing,
and / or walking for periods of up to eight hours. Dexterity of
hands and fingers Physical strength to lift heavy objects, carts,
or items, taking frequency and weight into consideration. The
normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying
objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds. Physical mobility, which includes
movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed
into account. Balance is maintained during climbing, bending and/or
reaching. Physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver
the body while in place. Environmental Risks: Chemicals, Sharps,
Latex, Chemotherapy and Fumes Loud noises Vibration Extreme
temperatures Confined spaces Allergens: dust, mold and/or pollen
Magnetic fields Radiation Combative patients/visitors Blood-borne
Pathogen: Exposure to infectious hazards, blood, body fluids,
non-intact skin or tissue specimens. Contact with patients or
patient specimens is possible. Unplanned or unexpected exposure.

Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:
Associate’s degree required. 2-4 years experience required. HT
degree or equivalent Certification as a lab technologist under CLIA
HT or HTL (ASCP) preferred. NY State License in Clinical Lab
Technology, Histology or related, required. Ability to communicate
in English, both orally and in writing required. Ability to use
critical thinking skills; develop, plan, and organize successful
projects required. Ability to function autonomously and is an
independent decision maker required. Experience with performing
gross descriptions on biopsy specimens preferred. Experience with
Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner,
Email/Voice Mail) preferred. Experience with Standard Office
Technology in a Window based environment preferred. Experience with
Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred. Broad knowledge of
tests performed, and equipment utilized in the laboratory Ability
to deal with confidential information with the utmost discretion.
Strong customer service skills are necessary to deal courteously
and effectively with administration, peers and the public.
Sufficient technical ability to be able to troubleshoot
independently. Travel: Travel to satellite locations as needed
